NZIM Certificate and NZIM Diploma in Practice Management (Health) – PMAANZ establishes an educational pathway
Practice Management has become a specialty area of management. Challenges encountered in the health industry are often unique; the tension between public funding versus private enterprise, government influence and funding compliance. These challenges require the Practice Manager to have a wide set of skills and knowledge in general business management plus a thorough understanding of economics particular to the health industry.
A survey identified that education needed to be:
- Accessible
- Affordable
- Relevant
- Academically robust
- Timeless
- Transferable
- Well Recognised
To achieve an internationally recognised standard of education, it is imperative PMAANZ align their educational requirements with a recognised educational organisation which is representative of management and the work of managers in New Zealand.
To this end, PMAANZ and the New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) have developed two health practice management qualifications: the NZIM Certificate in Practice Management (Health) and the NZIM Diploma in Practice Management (Health). These qualifications are NZQA approved and available now.
The NZIM Certificate in Practice Management (Health) is designed for managers and administrators new to study or those new to practice management. Along with continuing education and a code of conduct, the NZIM Diploma in Practice Management (Health) can be the benchmark standard in Practice Management and lead to registration as a professional Practice Manager.

To also encourage our Members to engage in professional development PMAANZ has developed a members Professional Development folder. This folder is for the collection of all information relating to your personal professional development. Take every opportunity and be open to continuing education – this will help to develop you as a person both personally and professionally.
If you don’t have a PMAANZ folder and would like one sent out to you, please request one by email from our administrator at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . You must have a current membership with PMAANZ.
One of the main gains we get from belonging to PMAANZ is networking with other managers and administrators and the realisation that others share the same problems in managing the complex service of primary health care. Sometimes we also have the solutions.
If you have a particular question/problem or solution use our members forum to enable people to email replies.
